CHRISTMAS FAYRE 2010 - WHAT HAPPENED ON THE DAY

Despite the snow, hundreds turned out to the annual Christmas Fayre. It was a great success. Thanks to all who attended and especially thanks to all those volunteers who made it happen.

Dancing performances were given by members of our youth club: hip-hop group The Stunners, A Sprinkle of Angel Dust, Candy Floss and Chloe Finneran. Ryan Dixon was our Master of Ceremonies with his masterful introduction of all the acts and the raffle prizes.

South Beach Karate Club gave their usual thrilling performance and Jennifer Cain with her dog Scamp gave a dog tricks demonstration. This was a last minute addition to replace Random and Seven Stars Theatre Companies, who unfortunately could not perform their Christmas plays due to the wintery weather.

ISABELLA CENTRE HEALTHY BUSINESS GOLD AWARD

The Isabella Community Centre in Blyth is now into its third year (2011) of participation in the NHS Healthy Business Healthy People Award scheme. Having “cut our teeth” at the Bronze and Silver levels, we are now “Going for Gold”.

The scheme in Northumberland has for several years been organised by the Northumberland Care Trust with the intention of promoting good health and well-being in the population, rather than just managing those that are sick. The workplace can be the ideal place to promote good health practices and there are many benefits to be had for the business. As a community organisation we would like everyone in our vicinity to benefit from our health-promotion activities and we will be inviting all our residents and neighbouring businesses to take advantage of the activities we will have on offer over the coming year.

Over the past two years we have hosted: Healthy Eating and Snacktimes, Workplace Stress, Display Screen Equipment, Manual Handling, Gentle Exercise Classes, Zumba Classes, Lunchtime Badminton and Indoor Sports Sessions, Tai Chi Taster, Personal MOTs (blood pressure, carbon monoxide testing etc) Health Quizzes, Wii and PC Fitness and many more events. We also reviewed all our Health, Safety and Welfare procedures with the aim of becoming an exemplar employer. All of this was led by staff and community, who were surveyed to find out how, together, we could improve the general well-being within the organisation. The winning of the Silver Award was recognition of the substantial efforts and improvements that we made.

At Gold level we are looking to extend our campaign to the families of our staff and placements as well as the wider, including business, community. We are also looking to become a much “greener” business. See photo gallery of our campaign...

CERAMIC PAINTING CLASS

CERAMIC PAINTING

New for October 2010. Tuesday Evening from 6.00pm

We are living in a world where individual expression is encouraged, where we go and how we spend our leisure time.  Ceramics offers you the opportunity to create something that is uniquely yours.  Starting with a plain white bisque shape, you paint on your design.

We use only the best quality material and fire our items high.  This makes them strong enough for everyday use.

Ceramic painting is for all age groups no matter what your age.  The only additional cost is the (material) cost of the paints.  Most cost between £4.00 and £20.00.

GET ONLINE DAY 2010

New to the internet and computing? Then come along to the Isabella Community Centre on Wednesday 13th October and be guided by our experienced and friendly IT Tutor, Doug Rutter, as part of the annual, and popular, GET ONLINE DAY.

YOUTH CLUB COLLECTING "CHRONICLE" WISH TOKENS

The youth club, based here at the Isabella Centre, are once again collecting WISH tokens from the Evening Chronicle. They will hopefully have a share in a £50,000 pot and are planning to use any funds to have a horse riding trip.

If you read the Chronicle, then please cut out and keep your tokens to help give the youths a treat! Thankyou.

Wish 10 is here!
Your Chronicle is inviting non-for profit organisations to take part in our community campaign.
This year, we have a fantastic £50,000 to give away.
The £50,000 cashpot will be divided by the number of tokens collected. The larger your share of tokens the bigger your slice of cash.
Getting on our Wish List is easy, too. Simply click on the link to fill in the registration form or alternatively pick up a copy of your Evening Chronicle newspaper.
Wish Campaign
Once you’ve been accepted on to our Wish List, you will be sent out a starter pack giving you all the materials you need to get your supporters ready for action.
Then it is a simply a case of waiting until Thursday, October 7 when we will start printing tokens in the Evening Chronicle every day for four months. All groups accepted on to our Wish List are guaranteed a share of the cash. The amount they receive depends on how many tokens collected during the campaign.

NORTHUMBRIA POLICE EBEAT YOUTH WEBSITE

News from Northumbria Police

ebeat youth website

We’re very excited about our youth website. Not only does it engage younger people with Northumbria Police, it also gives invaluable advice on staying safe, the effects of alcohol and drugs, and bullying. It also offers easy links into other websites if the user wants more information on, for example, the leisure activities available in their area.

If you go onto the website www.ebeat.org.uk you will notice that all the above information is listed under ‘my hub’. Information for parents and teachers is listed under ‘my resources’. Here there is a wealth of information for parents to reassure them about issues affecting their children.

The site also has links to our Facebook, Twitter and Youtube pages.

We hope you find the website useful, you can access and interact with us here:

ISABELLA HEAP REGENERATION PROJECT

An exciting regeneration project at Isabella Heap with Northumberland Wildlife Trust.

The Northumberland Wildlife Trust have obtained three years' worth of funding to roll out a new phase of environmental projects (SENSE II) regenerating some of Northumberland's natural community areas. One of the six new areas in the SENSE II project will be the Isabella Heap.

Part of the NWT's strategy is to consult and engage with local residents on this project, providing educational and volunteering opportunities and a sense of community involvement.

"The Isabella Heap is owned by Northumberland County Council and is situated between Cowpen and Newsham in Blyth. The “Bella” is a large and well-known feature in Blyth including areas of grassland, plantation woodland and panoramic views from the top of the heap. However, there are a number of social problems associated with the site including vandalism, fly tipping and substance abuse.

There is a desire in the local community to see something positive done at Isabella Heap to help  claim the site for the whole community to use. The SENSE strategy at Isabella will hinge on the involvement of the local community and consultation will be one of the first steps for the project at this site. The project will liaise with the active and well established community centre and residents association on the doorstep of the reserve. The results of the consultation phase will inform the approach for the project."

A representative from NWT will be attending a Cowpen Farm and Isabella Residents Association meeting on 22nd Sept 2010 7pm at the Isabella Centre. All members of the community are welcome to attend and join in the discussion. This is an exciting, much needed, opportunity for the area. Please join us on the night and get involved.
